The First Lady of Texas, Mrs. Anita Perry was in Houston last Friday (4/18/08) to help celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Houston Area Women's Center, and it's service to survivors of domestic and sexual abuse. The HAWC was also honoring State Representative Ellen Cohen with the first annual “Woman of Wisdom Award.” Representative Cohen recently retired as President and CEO of the “Center” after serving as its primary advocate for the elimination of domestic and sexual abuse... two issues very dear to the First Lady. And, in case you didn't know, there's a new President and CEO for the Houston Area Women's Center, whose already been on the job now for about 5 weeks. Rebecca White says, she too is committed to eradicating domestic and sexual violence in our community and providing services to the victims.

But this was also a night filled with fun. The decorations created a 70's type ambiance that lent itself to a festive mood. After the presentations and dinner it was time for dessert. But dessert wasn't mentioned on the menu some jokingly said "Fried Ice Cream" might be the dessert. But we were so wrong. “Fried Ice Cream"was REALLY “HOT” and not just in their name.

They played song after song from, the 70s and 80s, and their 2 lead vocalists... one female and a male... rounded out the night of fun and celebration. The funny thing... most of the folks here actually knew the words to the songs and were singing along out loud, too. You could see ladies dressed in their gowns and gents in tuxedos mouthing the words to nearly all of the songs. The band was really good. “Fried Ice Cream”  had a  crowded dance floor on every tune they played. And they played a lot of music that night. Congratulations to the HAWC for 30 years... and wishes for another 30 years, and more.
