A BAND CALLED FRIED ICE CREAM
By Darren Sharpe (Coffee Table Magazine)

My interview with Shang and Sky, the lead vocalists for FRIED ICE CREAM, was without a doubt in my Fav 5. I’ve had one-on-one time with many a musician and entertainment personalities, but this was one that really stood out. Their modest and humble nature was so refreshing, and both seemed to have such a positive outlook on life, even with the woes of today’s world. I am of strong opinion that we could all use some better role models, people that our kids can look up to, public figures that actually care about people. And I believe that I have found two of them. They have integrity, they have heart, and they have talent! Keep your eyes open, I have no doubt these two will impact the music world.

Shang and Sky formed FRIED ICE CREAM after playing for several years together in another group. They toured throughout the U.S., playing for audiences of different color, different background, different religion, status, creed, and everything else that makes us the dynamic multi-cultural nation that we are. They found out they had 2 things in common: a genuine love for people, and the fact that they would sacrifice for music. “I always tell Shang he should be in politics. He loves to kiss babies and old ladies. I really love that about him, he always has time to shake your hand, and that’s important,” said Sky during the interview. Shang added, “… we like to connect with people. We’re all brothers and sisters of the same lodge.” They were so easy to talk to, and Sky has such a warm presence. Shang is also a natural comic. You feel so comfortable around them, like you’ve known them for years. I discovered during my interview that neither one of them have any type of formal training at all! It’s all natural, all from the heart.

I listened to their new CD’s and was blown away by the diverse song selection and the rhythmic and contagious melodies. They have Pop appeal, R&B appeal, Jazz connection, true crossover capability. Shang refers to their style as “funkarockapopjazzfusion.” Interesting. But what I really like is what they have to say. The songs are all written by Shang and Sky, and they’ve got some powerful stuff here. “Color is just another word for rainbow.”  I think Shang sums it up with the lyrics in his song “Club America.”

I asked what was left, as musicians of such broad popularity, it seems they have covered so much, with touring, CD releases, and developing such an extensive fan base. “We want the whole world to hear what we have to say. We want to make a difference.    Oh, and a Grammy would be nice!” Bravo!! I’ll be in the front row when you accept.
